Learn how Korean Saju masters evaluate romantic compatibility through the Four Pillars system.
In Korean culture, checking Saju compatibility (궁합, gunghap) before marriage is a tradition that dates back centuries. Even in modern Korea, many couples visit a Saju master to evaluate their cosmic compatibility before committing to marriage. While some view it as superstition, many Koreans consider it a form of wisdom — a way to understand potential relationship dynamics before they unfold.
Saju compatibility analysis examines how two people's birth charts interact across multiple dimensions. The most fundamental assessment looks at the Five Element relationship between the two Day Masters. The generating cycle (상생, sangsaeng) — where one element naturally supports another — is considered the most harmonious: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal generates Water, and Water nourishes Wood.
The controlling cycle (상극, sangguk) isn't necessarily negative in compatibility readings. Some degree of creative tension keeps a relationship dynamic and growing. However, when one partner's Day Master strongly controls the other's without reciprocal support, the relationship may feel imbalanced — one person constantly dominant and the other constantly yielding.
