Ba Zi (八字, Eight Characters) is the Chinese-language term for the same system that Koreans call Saju (사주팔자, Four Pillars of Destiny). Both traditions analyze the same four pillars — Year, Month, Day, Hour — expressed as pairs of Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. The underlying Five Elements logic is identical.
For a free reading with only your birth date, the system constructs three pillars: Year, Month, and Day. The Year Pillar reveals how others perceive you socially. The Month Pillar describes your professional nature. The Day Pillar is the most personal: the Heavenly Stem of the Day — called the Day Master (日主) — defines your fundamental character type.
There are ten possible Day Masters, corresponding to the ten Heavenly Stems: Jiǎ Wood (甲木) — pioneering; Yǐ Wood (乙木) — adaptable; Bǐng Fire (丙火) — charismatic; Dīng Fire (丁火) — intuitive; Wù Earth (戊土) — dependable; Jǐ Earth (己土) — nurturing; Gēng Metal (庚金) — decisive; Xīn Metal (辛金) — refined; Rén Water (壬水) — strategic; Guǐ Water (癸水) — perceptive.
